​Tai Kwun shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival’s Completed Buildings Culture Prize

Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Arts has been shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival’s Completed Buildings Culture Prize!

The World Architecture Festival, also known as WAF, is a live awards competition and events programme dedicated to championing, sharing and celebrating architectural excellence across the world. This year, the Festival will be held in Amsterdam on the 4-6th of December.

Situated in Hong Kong, Tai Kwun was once the Central Police Station which was decommissioned in 2006. The Hong Kong Jockey Club — One of the oldest institutions in Hong Kong — chose Purcell, Herzog & de Meuron and Rocco Design Architects to transform the building into the flourishing cultural centre it is today.

Purcell played a key part in conserving the 170 years of the Central Police Station’s rich cultural and architectural history. As a result, Tai Twun’s architectural mix of historic and contemporary architecture is a celebration of Hong Kong culture and identity.

The building immerses its visitors inside the architectural heritage of the site, which is also illustrated throughout the Centre’s interactive tours, heritage storytelling spaces, diverse educational programs and exhibitions.
