Part of Sydney Harbour National Park, Goat Island is recognised for its rich array of Aboriginal, historic and natural heritage values, including over 30 buildings and structures dating from the 1830s to the 1960s.
Purcell was engaged by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) to support a project to transfer the Island back to Aboriginal ownership and management.
To understand the condition of the buildings and structures within the Magazine Precinct, Purcell prepared a comprehensive condition assessment and recommendations, assessing the condition of 26 buildings, structures, and essential services.
This plan delved into the intricacies of each structure, evaluating their state of preservation, and is to be used to estimate the costs involved in restoration and remediation efforts.
Purcell was then commissioned to undertake tender and construction documentation for the conservation and upgrade of the dilapidated Boat Shed structure, located on the Island’s foreshore. Purcell provided heritage architect services during the construction Phase, including the answering of Client and Contractor RFIs, advice, inspection of hold and witness points and on-site progress reviews for the work.
The Condition Report recommended the conservation of specific elements, highlighting those requiring urgent repair and prioritising necessary works. It emphasised the continued use of traditional materials and conservation techniques.
This initiative not only underscores the team’s commitment to heritage conservation but also acknowledges the significance of indigenous custodianship. Through collaborative efforts with NPWS and a deep respect for the island’s historical and cultural importance, the project supports the future sustainable heritage management of the place.
