Maesteg Town Hall

Creative transformation and extension of a listed community hub

Location
Wales
Client
Bridgend County Borough Council

Purcell were commissioned to undertake the repair, extension, and alteration of the Grade II-listed Maesteg Town Hall.

Our innovative design provides an enhanced performance area, studio, and community learning space accessed via a new, accessible front-of-house that engages directly with the street to draw in new audiences and provide opportunities for informal performance.

The site is bounded to three sides by public routes, with the Town Hall contributing significantly to the setting of Talbot Street, Talbot Square, and Church Street, and the fourth (west) side forming a backdrop to the recently refurbished outdoor market. The scheme, therefore, provides a significant opportunity to not only affect the existing building’s re-use but also provide a potent symbol of the cultural vibrancy of Maesteg and the Llynfi Valley.

The project comprises a new-build element, providing front of house facilities, informal performance spaces and additional studio space to accompany the existing performance space. Additional works included conversion of the existing market space into a community library with work pods for start-up businesses, as well as a local history centre and café.
