Melbourne Metro Project

Supporting heritage on new stations

Location
Australia
Client
Cross Yarra Partnership (CYP)

As part of the consortium for the construction of five new underground stations and a tunnel through central Melbourne, Purcell, in collaboration with GJM Heritage, were closely involved in the development plan stage for Anzac, Town Hall and Parkville stations. Throughout the construction phase, we have continued to provided heritage advice, historical background and impact assessments.

The sheer size of the project, combined with the location of several stations within highly sensitive settings, presented a challenge to the design team. Purcell worked closely with the design and construction teams to provide detailed heritage advice on station designs and the mitigating of impacts on surrounding heritage sites, including Flinders Street Station, Federation Square, St Kilda Road, Domain Parklands and the Anzac Memorial.

As works progressed, Purcell provided built heritage advice on the relocation of several heritage assets, statues, and monuments, which were dismantled and stored, to be reinstated as part of the works.

Purcell has assisted the project team in the heritage approvals process, including the preparation of Heritage Impact Statements, advice on mitigating heritage place impacts, and liaison with Heritage Victoria and other approval bodies.

Purcell continue to provide heritage advice to the design and construction teams to support delivery of the project.
