St. George’s Hall is Liverpool’s principal civic building and arguably the finest neoclassical building in Europe. During the late 20th Century, the building suffered decades of under-investment and it was closed to the public in the 1980s.
Purcell was asked to prepare a development masterplan for this iconic building to initiate its renaissance.
We prepared a conservation and strategic plan to prioritise the main aspects of the renovation in restoring and preserving the building fabric and reviving St George's Hall as a sustainable multifunctional venue.
Extensive conservation of the stonework was required including repair and cleaning. Work involved close liaison with English Heritage and the local conservation team.
Works to the North Entrance Hall included paint analysis of the original finishes to allow accurate reinstatement, plaster and stonework repairs and the introduction of modern services.
The restored Hall represents the dramatic regeneration of Liverpool as a cultural centre.
We secured phase I funding of £18m and obtained a further £5m for phase II. We also achieved planning permission, listed building consent and building regulations approvals to enable delivery of the client’s vision for the building.
The rebirth of this iconic landmark resulted in an official opening by HRH Prince Charles in 2007. The building was also the centrepiece for the opening ceremony of the European Capital of Culture in 2008.
The refurbished concert room is a key achievement of the project and represents a fine example of early Victorian interior design. The cantilevered stone staircases from the concert room were dismantled and extended to create a means of escape. The stone landings are some of the largest ever cut in the UK.
Our project was the driving force behind the renaissance of St. George’s Hall as an active, multifunctional venue at the heart of Liverpool’s heritage and cultural life.
