Purcell provided conservation and architecture services for the relocation of the Wollert Church to the Carome Estate in the nearby suburb of Mernda, Victoria Australia.
Established in 1878, the Wollert Church is a well-preserved example of Carpenter Gothic architecture in the Whittlesea area. It features key elements of the style, including timber cladding, gothic arched windows, angular design, and a restrained decorative scheme. A less significant lean-to annex that was added to the rear at a later date, was not relocated.
The relocation of the Church was in response to the delivery of a roads project by Major Roads Project Victoria. Early investigations identified a large portion of fabric in poor condition, as well as the presence of hazardous materials. The proposed relocation methodology required stabilisation of fabric in-situ and careful dismantling to enable transportation.
Purcell provided documentation for conservation works, integrated structural, services, cosmetic renewal and, universal access improvements working with the endorsed CHMP (Cultural Heritage Management Plan) for Carome Estate.
New design elements included a ramped entry and modifications to openings, to meet the requirements of the new site and that of the NCC and DDA.
Purcell also provided services from town planning through to construction; this continuation of service helped deliver a successful project outcome for the Client, building and Carome Estate.
