Nick de Klerk reviews Rowan Moore’s Property: The Myth that Built the World

13 February 2024

Purcell’s Head of Hospitality, Nick de Klerk, delves into Rowan Moore’s new book, Property: The Myth that Built the World in Building Design.

The book examines the complex history and impact of property on the modern world, focusing on the socio-political and financial motives ‘underpinning much of the built environment’.

De Klerk's review notes how 'something [property] which has become so fundamental to the way in which we organise our lives remains relatively unexamined' and questions why alternative ways of living are not considered more often.

In the review, written for The London Society, and republished on Building Design, de Klerk summarises… 'What is clear, however, is that something must be done. That process starts with a better and much broader understanding of the challenge (as well as the possibility of change) amongst the electorate, which is where books like this offer invaluable insight’.
